⁷ The Lord appeared to Abram^(A) and said, “To your offspring^[a] I will give this land.^(B)”^(C) So he built an altar there to the Lord,^(D) who had appeared to him.

⁸ From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel^(A) and pitched his tent,^(B) with Bethel on the west and Ai^(C) on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.^(D)

³ From the Negev^(A) he went from place to place until he came to Bethel,^(B) to the place between Bethel and Ai^(C) where his tent had been earlier

⁴ and where he had first built an altar.^(A) There Abram called on the name of the Lord.^(B)

¹² For the generations to come^(A) every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised,^(B) including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. ¹³ Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.^(C) My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.^{(D) 14} Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised^(E) in the flesh, will be cut off from his people;^(F) he has broken my covenant.^(G)”

¹⁹ For I have chosen him^(A), so that he will direct his children^(B) and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord^(C) by doing what is right and just,^(D) so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”^(E)

⁹ Only be careful,^(A) and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach^(B) them to your children^(C) and to their children after them.

¹⁰ Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb,^(A) when he said to me, “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn^(B) to revere^(C) me as long as they live in the land^(D) and may teach^(E) them to their children.”
